Daisetsuzan Sounkyo Kurodake

Kurodake (Mount Kuro) is a high-alpine ski area in the Daisetsuzan National Park, accessed from the famous Sounkyo Onsen gorge hot spring village. A ropeway and chairlift carry skiers to 1,520 meters, where 2 marked courses and vast backcountry terrain await. This is a destination for experienced skiers and snowboarders who seek ungroomed, natural mountain terrain with deep powder snow in a spectacular volcanic landscape.

The Daisetsuzan range receives heavy snowfall, averaging 10 meters per season, and the high altitude ensures exceptionally cold, dry snow quality. The season runs from late November through early May, one of the longest in Hokkaido. Sounkyo Onsen at the base is one of Hokkaido's most scenic hot spring towns, set in a dramatic gorge with frozen waterfalls in winter. The combination of wild backcountry skiing and traditional onsen culture makes Kurodake a unique destination.
